Using screenshots in Floaters

Screenshots in Floaters

Floaters can automatically open your screenshots in floating windows, making them easily accessible while working in other apps.

Floaters doesn't actually take screenshots, because it doesn't really need to. macOS has a great built-in screenshot tool that Floaters works with seamlessly. All you have to do is point Floaters in the direction of your screenshots folder.

Setup

  1. In Floaters, go to Settings → Screenshots → Import When Added to Folder section and check the Enabled checkbox.
  2. Next, make sure the Location selection matches your system's screenshots folder. If you're not sure where that's at, you can press ⌘⇧5 to bring up your system's screenshot options, then click Options and see what's selected under Save To.

Floaters will only import screenshots while the Floaters app is open. Any screenshots taken when Floaters is closed can be easily imported by dragging onto the Floaters app icon, or select File menu → Open and choosing the file.

About that Delay...

macOS by default will show a preview of your screenshot, and then after a few seconds it will create the screenshot file. Floaters can't load the screenshot into the app until the file actually exists. So if you want to speed up this process, you can simply disable that preview. To do this:

  1. Press ⌘⇧5 (Command-Shift-5)
  2. Click Options
  3. Uncheck Show Floating Thumbnail

This will cause the screenshot to instantly save to disk, and open in Floaters.

Keyboard Shortcuts

With the macOS screenshot utility, you can use the following keyboard shortcuts:

  • Full screenshot: ⌘⇧3
  • Selected area screenshot: ⌘⇧4
  • Specific window screenshot: ⌘⇧4 then press the Space bar and click the window you'd like to capture
